You can upgrade your site at any time to access additional features. In this guide, you’ll learn how to upgrade and apply any available upgrade credit.
A plan is a subscription that determines which features are available for your site.
To upgrade your website’s WordPress.com plan, take the following steps:
- Go to your site’s dashboard.
- In the left menu, select Upgrades → Plans (or Hosting → Plans if using WP Admin).
- Click the Upgrade button under your chosen plan.
- On the checkout page, select your payment frequency from the drop-down.

- Verify your billing information and payment details.
- If you have a discount code, click the “Have a coupon?” link and enter your code.
- Click “Complete checkout” to complete the upgrade.
If you have time remaining on your current plan, you will see an upgrade credits notice on your plans page. This credit automatically reduces your total at checkout when you upgrade to a higher plan or switch to a longer billing period.

The credit amount is calculated based on months remaining. For example, if you have 6 months left on a 12-month plan, you’ll receive credit for half of your plan’s value when upgrading.
Upgrade credits can be used to:
- Upgrade to a higher-tier plan for the same site.
- Switch to a longer billing cycle for the same plan (for example, monthly to annual, or one-year to two-year) for the same site.
Upgrade credits cannot be used for:
- Renewing your current plan at the same tier and billing cycle.
- Purchasing a plan for a different site or domain.
- Domains, email upgrades, themes, or other add-ons.
- Downgrading to a lower-tier plan.
If you purchased a .com, .blog, .net, or .org domain before upgrading to a plan with a free domain credit, you’ll receive an upgrade credit for the domain’s full cost at checkout.
If you purchased a different domain extension before buying a plan that includes the free domain credit, you can contact our Happiness Engineers. Domains purchased within 96 hours before getting the qualifying plan are eligible for a refund or plan credit.
Plans are offered in monthly, annual, and multi-year options. When you upgrade your plan, you will have the option to select a new payment frequency. Learn how to change your payment frequency.
You have the flexibility to change your plan in the following ways:
- Monthly to annual or multi-year: Change from monthly billing to annual or multi-year billing at any time.
- Annual to multi-year: Change from annual billing to multi-year billing.
