What happens when technology starts to look – and act – almost like us? This is the basis of the uncanny valley phenomenon; an unsettling feeling when “human-like” robots or digital AI assistants appear almost human, but not quite.  As organizations invest in these lifelike technologies, understanding this response could become a business consideration for those with products they hope to sell.  Learn more about the tech and psychology behind it from our SVP of Enterprise Governance and Technology, Blair Radbourne, in our latest The Relatable Economist piece.

At our inaugural Women’s Forum, we asked 175 women what power meant to them – and every answer was unique.  💡 Our guest speaker, Diana Matheson, co-founder of Canada's Women's Northern Super League, shared that power means intentionally embracing leadership and using her platform to inspire others. 💡Our Chief Human Resources Officer, Nancy Nazer, Ph.D. ICD. reminded us that “this room is power,” and that harnessing your strengths is your superpower. Co-chair of the Women in Investments ERG, Shafak Khanani, highlighted the rise of women in the investment space over the last 10 years and was inspired by the turnout from the event and attendees’ definitions of power. Thank you to everyone in the Women’s ERG for hosting such a meaningful event filled with thoughtful discussions – and these conversations won’t stop here.  We’ve formally launched a Women in Investments ERG dedicated to fostering connection, advancing inclusion, and supporting professional growth.

I had the privilege of attending COP30 in the beautiful country of Brazil earlier this week. I participated in a number of panels – hosted by the Milken Institute, the Investor Leadership Network, and TED Countdown House – that explored how institutional investors are identifying actionable pathways to a more resilient future. We particularly focused on how the shift to a low-carbon energy future depends on modernizing and expanding infrastructure at unprecedented speed and scale – something that we are actively invested in at OMERS. These discussions and many others at COP 30 reinforced the need to keep advancing dialogue and action around the energy transition. It’s through collaboration and shared understanding that we unlock the capital needed to scale sustainable infrastructure. There were many discussions in Brazil around nature-based solutions and how these initiatives can be structured in ways that make them attractive investments for institutional investors. These innovative solutions will depend on robust carbon markets and continued commitment to emissions reductions among corporates and civil society, supported by government policies and stable and predictable regulatory frameworks. It truly is a team effort in tackling the global challenges presented by climate change. At OMERS, these conversations matter. They underscore our commitment to deliver on the pension promise – for our members today and for generations to come.

Institutional asset owners recognize climate considerations as an important part of assessing risk and opportunity in investment decision-making. But how are these considerations being implemented? To answer this, CREO, in collaboration with the Investor Leadership Network, One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds, and the Milken Institute, interviewed 14 institutional asset owners. The resulting paper explores how these organizations integrate climate into governance, strategy, workflows, and decision-making, and shares 12 key takeaways. We’re proud to have contributed our perspective to this forward-thinking paper and encourage you to read it here: https://lnkd.in/etA4PZ9K

What happens when 103 top business students from across Canada tackle a valuation case? You get a glimpse into the future of our industry. At this year’s BV Challenge, hosted by the Chartered Business Valuators Institute (CBV Institute), 30 teams from 18 leading Canadian business schools pitched their strategies to a panel of judges, including Curtis Boesche, CBV, CPA, Manager, Investment Finance & Valuations at OMERS. As a proud sponsor of this event, we saw firsthand the creativity and professionalism these students brought to the table.  Congratulations to Maya Bezubiak, Allan Solomon and Cainwyn Clark from the University of Alberta for first place, and to the teams from the University of Toronto and University of Calgary for finishing second and third, respectively.
